The year is 2192.

The country is the United States.

The current regime, The Trust, has been in power for over one hundred years.

The Trust takes care of you from cradle to grave--they provide you with housing, education, jobs, vehicles--but, in exchange, they control everything about your life. What color car you will drive. Where you will live. And, most important of all: who you will marry and how many children you will have.

Do you fight them or favor them?

Being born to Emil and his second wife Gabriella,, Juliette’s life wasn’t all that different from many of her classmates at school. Being one of triplets insured that she was both invisible and visible at the same time. Elena and Arielle were always the closer of the triplets, leaving Juliette to herself more often than not. She didn’t mind, she was a quiet and rather withdrawn child – her sisters were the vivacious and outgoing ones. Because no one could tell them apart,, they often only knew it was Jules when she didn’t start chattering away like a magpie.

At 13, her and her sister’s lives changed forever. Elena, the daredevil triplet, fell out of a tree and broke her neck. Jules was quite heartbroken. Sent home to mourn and work through the grief, she turned to her brother, Tanner, for comfort. Ari was always with their mother, and Jules felt like she was in the way. Tanner always had time for her, and they could be found together most days, just talking about Elena and the family. It was all so innocent.

Without Elena to bring them together, Ari and Jules drifted apart. Ari buried herself in her studies, and Jules sought to be even more invisible than before. She aced her tests if only to make sure that she wouldn’t have to stay at home with their father. Emil was a terrifying man, and Jules spent as much time away from him as possible.

One weekend, Jules and Tanner had spent the entire time in each other’s pockets, and when it came time for her to return to school, she didn’t want to go. She reached up to hug her half-brother, and somehow, they were kissing. It was so nice. So perfect. Tanner understood her. Tanner knew who she was, not that she was just one of the triplets. The second kiss was no accident.

She knew that they were courting danger, but still couldn’t help herself. Tanner was family, so that meant that her bracelet didn’t register anything wrong, but when Ari confessed having seen the kiss – Jules knew that she would need to be far more careful. She begged and pleaded with Ari to not tell anyone. Finally confessing that she’d fallen in love with Tanner. It was somewhat freeing to admit it, even though she knew that she couldn’t tell anyone else.

This shared secret brought the girls closer for a while, but it wasn’t to last. Adding to the tragedy, their mother died. Another trip home, and precious time to spend with Tanner. And with the bracelets out, there was far less risk. On the last day of her leave, she snuck into Tanner’s room, and they consummated their love. Jules knew that it was risky, but at that point, she simply didn’t care. She wanted Tanner to be her first. Not some stranger. She had some control over that at least.

Exit exams taken and passed, and home for another weekend. That was Jules’ life. Time with Tanner was precious and taken full advantage of. There was some thrill in it – doing it right beneath their father’s nose. They took strict precautions, of course, to ensure that she wouldn’t fall pregnant.

Then, the other shoe dropped in the form of her draft packet. She was devastated. She didn’t want to be drafted. She might have to be, but she didn’t want to be. It was even more devastating because her father had kept the packet from her until just a week before the draft was to happen. Jules read the packet, enjoyed what time she had with Tanner, and practiced being the perfect wife.

The night before her draft, she had one last desperate tryst with Tanner, and then left for her fate. Her husband was a nice sort of man, just a bit older than her. She pretended to be happy. Pretended that everything was just as perfect as it could be.

It wasn’t. She missed Tanner. She missed Tanner’s best friend, Cooper. She missed Cooper’s kids. Still, she went through the motions. Secretly pleased that her husband hasn’t wanted to sleep with her in all this time. The image she presents is necessary, but soon, she has promised herself that she will get back to Tanner and tell him it is all a sham.
