WELCOME

The year is 2192.

The country is the United States.

The current regime, The Trust, has been in power for over one hundred years.

The Trust takes care of you from cradle to grave--they provide you with housing, education, jobs, vehicles--but, in exchange, they control everything about your life. What color car you will drive. Where you will live. And, most important of all: who you will marry and how many children you will have.

Do you fight them or favor them?

Appearance

Olivia stands at 5'3'' with an average frame that she keeps tight with a disciplined yoga regime. Her most distinctive trait, according to her, is her wide forehead. Like her mother, she has dimples that appear when she smiles.

History

Olivia Alice was born two weeks late to Lucille and Rowell Denning. She arrived on a breezy April morning, barely crying and with a head full of dark brown hair. She came to join her big sister, Dana, and two years later, was promoted to middle child when Noelle came along on a Christmas morning.

Her parents were one of the worst romantic pairings the Trust could have made. But what Lucy and Rowell lacked in spark, they shared in friendship and companionship. They were the best of friends and loved their girls above all. Olivia never felt neglected or uncared for, which she is truly grateful of.

Being the middle child had its perks. For example, she was never alone in the house. When Dana left for boarding school, Olivia had Noelle. Then, when it was her turn to leave for St. Martha’s, she had her big sister there.

Her first year of school, however, was not the best. Her parents were called in twice. Olivia was very smart and talented, the teachers said but put zero effort in class. Her grades reflected a mediocre student when, in reality, Olivia could have been top of her year. In the end, she agreed to put a little more work and that was it. No one bothered her anymore which, in years to come, would come in handy.

Her grades became average. Olivia was not a fan of the spotlight and constant pressure that came from being the best. Her most important school moment was her little book club. It consisted of weekly meetings in the school library where they’d discuss whatever text they were reading in class that week. It was all Trust approved material, of course. Olivia liked the small community around it.

Her love for literature earned her a spot with the school librarian, who made sure that there was always new material for the girls to discuss. The teachers kept an eye on them. But since none of what they were saying was deemed dangerous, they never bothered anyone.

For a while, things were good. Until Olivia was thirteen. Her parents were arrested for supposedly having ties with a rebellious group. She was confused, but not surprised. She had seen how different Lucy and Rowell acted, how they raised their girls to have a mind of their own and to do their own thing. Their behavior was subtle, but it was there. Their middle daughter was just too observant.

After her father’s execution, the book club was “officially" shut down. The teachers were scared that the Denning girl leading it could spread subversive messages. Olivia became determined that it wouldn’t end until she said it would. Her first taste of freedom happened when it occurred to her that she could hold clandestine book club meetings in her room. But most of the girls didn’t return and one of them even tattled on her. She was sent to detention. After one more try, Olivia stopped trying. Her sense of self-preservation overcoming her desire to tell the school to go to hell.

Olivia remained an average student. She socialized less with her peers and kept close to her sisters. Her journals became the one place where she started to question the school’s material and women’s roles in society. Occasionally, she’d ask her mother, hoping to get more answers surrounding her father’s arrest. Each day, she was more and more certain that she wanted in on whatever it was her parents took part in.

As soon as she turned eighteen, she made sure that her exit exams had a score low enough to keep her from being drafted for a year. In the midst of the refreshment courses, Olivia approached her mother and asked to be part of the rebellion. Given her status as an unwed female, there wasn’t much for her to do on the outside. But, oh boy, was she a good strategist. She spent most of her first year in the rebellion group studying how the government worked. She found illegal literature to complement her knowledge and started to create tactics that could strengthen the rebellion and be one step ahead of the Trust. Currently, Olivia is working hard to earn her place.

Of course, she couldn’t avoid a draft forever. A year ago, the file of her future husband came in. While she’s not happy about it, Olivia knows that part of being in the rebellion is playing the role of dutiful law-abiding wife. After all, she is no good dead.

Fun fact, Olivia is also the proud owner of a small box containing illegal reading material. Her favorite titles are “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen, “Anna Karenina” by Lev Tolstoi, “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu, “The Prince” by Nicholas Machiavelli, “The Republic” by Plato and “Utopia” by Thomas Moore. She keeps them hidden inside one of the resistance's hideouts.
