The year is 2192.

The country is the United States.

The current regime, The Trust, has been in power for over one hundred years.

The Trust takes care of you from cradle to grave--they provide you with housing, education, jobs, vehicles--but, in exchange, they control everything about your life. What color car you will drive. Where you will live. And, most important of all: who you will marry and how many children you will have.

Do you fight them or favor them?

Phryne has pouty lips and a blue, dead stare that looks right through you. Her face is always framed by wild, unmanageable curls. The blonde locks are cut to sit on her shoulders when they annoy her enough to need shearing. A bold lip is usually the most makeup she wears, opting for a natural and glowing look unless she has something to hide. She is short and slender and some think she would be more attractive if she were only an inch or so taller.

Her back is marked with scars, but few people will ever see them. She has a smaller, half-moon shaped scar across her lower spine and similar permanent marks about her left wrist. These are typically hidden with modest clothing. Her arms and back are usually covered, as one shoulder is the only unblemished point of her back. In light of this, Phryne thinks her legs are her most attractive feature and is more comfortable showing them than any other piece of her body.

Phryne Fletcher was thrust into the world three months too early, much to the dismay of her father who she would continue to disappoint throughout her childhood. She was a small, sickly little thing that bawled and wallowed in her premature state. A devout Catholic, Anderson would never forgive God for cursing him with a daughter.

Phryne’s childhood was unremarkable in most respects.

Her family went to Mass on Sundays. The women were quiet and obedient, subservient and raised to be perfect Trust-lings. At least that was the idea, but Phryne never could live her life the way her father wanted. Perhaps it was his inability to forgive her for being a girl that made it so difficult. He wanted her to be meek, but she was outspoken. He wanted her to devote her free time to her studies and to God, but she wanted a life. He wanted her to bow to the will of the men that surrounded her, to grow and birth him grandsons to expand his family, but Phryne was defiant. She didn’t know what she wanted, but she knew it was not the life her father and The Trust promised her.

And so Anderson determined to beat it out of her. Phryne has always assumed that was why she was an only child. Her mother is mentally unstable, always was and will always be. Her mind isn’t well and cannot seem to settle on one thing. Her father is a temperamental sociopath. He never could bring himself to strike Nora. Something seemed wrong to him about striking a woman in her questionable mental state. But he never could control his temper with his daughter. It never helped that she fought back or deliberately put herself in his line of sight. Her temper matched his.

Her mother never quite recovered from giving birth once. She has suffered from depression since and has always been prone to flights of fancy, psychotic breaks, and debilitating anxiety. And her father is, for lack of a stronger term, a temperamental sociopath. Phryne became her mother’s keeper and her father’s punching bag.

When her father became violent, Phryne was grateful for the haven of boarding school. She could be the devious, loquacious, fire of a young woman she wanted to be. She learned she loved to dance, draw and paint. She loved flowers and gardening. Phryne discovered she had a passion for writing, smut and romance for the most part, things she knew she shouldn’t write. And she loved to toy with fate, developing her own spiritual self and questioning the heavy-handed religion of her family. To this day she carries tarot card with her everywhere and secretly hopes they will give her futuristic insight. She is also incredibly superstitious.

Outside of her interests, Phryne had very few friends and unremarkable grades. Throughout her studies, she found it difficult to trust her classmates or let anyone in. She collected a small, unimpressive group of friends, mostly girls of course, who were all predictable. Phryne was the troublemaker of the group, but she was also always the first one to take the fall.

For a time, Phryne did have one male friend- her cousin Marius. He was the only person who had ever stood up for her or tried to get between her and her father. But, like all good things, Phryne learned she was but a means to an end. Marius was a rebel, though he had no causes but destruction. It fascinated her for a long time. Maybe she saw some of herself in him. But as they grew together, his cousinly friendship turned into an inappropriate fixation. The affection he wanted, she would not give. And so he, too, became violent and took that which he wanted by force. It broke her, and destroyed what little faith she had in man. Each time he advanced, it stole another little part of who she was.

When it was discovered by his brother, it became a family matter. That was how all moral issues were resolved in the Fletcher family: by Phryne’s Uncle Malcolm, the eldest of the Fletcher brothers. He determined that Phryne would move to Ashpoint to care for his young and pregnant wife. It would put distance between her and Marius, allowing the boy time to come to his senses and it would keep the family name untarnished.

Phryne was devastated. She dreaded tending to her aunt and suffering at the hands of her uncle. At least there would be a couple of cities between her and her father, though she has had some complicated feelings about leaving her mother behind. She feels as though she abandoned her.

Shortly after moving in with her uncle, the Ashpoint incident sent the family into disarray. Her uncle was out of town at the time and Phryne was spending all of her time in school with remedial classes. She was lost in the shuffle and, by a stroke of luck, ended up in Tidewater and separated from the Fletchers. She has done her best to hide ever since.

Now, as she awaits her draft, Phryne is anxious of the changes it will bring. Though she is glad it will give her a more permanent escape from the Fletcher family, she is not ready or sure that she is willing to pursue an intimate relationship. She likes to be in control and has figured out that the best way to do that is to handle everything on her own. Other people are too unpredictable.
