PersonalityCharis is wallpaper. She's so quiet and shy most folks don't notice her until she says something. She prefers reading books to the company of other people.
She's pretty high strung. Every little thing has the potential to send her spiraling into anxiety. She doesn't like to deviate from plans or schedules and doesn't do well with change.
Ever since she became interested in true crime, Charis sees suspicious circumstances everywhere. If there's anything she's learned, it's that killers are everywhere and bad things can happen to anyone at any time. She's on a first-name basis with the folks who run the police tip line.
AppearanceCharis is tall, lean, and leggy, giving the impression of a gangly fawn. Her face is soft and rounded, making her look much younger than she is (she hates it). Her blonde hair is long and naturally wavy (and she hates that, too).
HistoryCharis still has nightmares. The way the door crashed when SOAR kicked it open. Men with guns forcing their way into the house. Her baby brother wailing. Her wrist heavy with the brand-new sensor bracelet.
It was her sixth birthday and her parents, Asher and Janine, had just brought her home from a birthday dinner. Charis giggled while her mother showed her how to make the bracelet change colors, or show her blood pressure. Charis changed it to pink that day.
"Look, Mommy, I did it all by myself!"
Janine opened her mouth to say something but whatever it was she said was cut off by their front door being kicked off the hinges.
SOAR officers ripped Charis and her brother away from her parents. The last time Charis saw her mother, she was being wrestled to the ground and handcuffed.
Ever since that day, Charis has always felt on edge. She doesn't like loud, sudden noises. She's always looking around a room for places to hide or make a quick getaway.
Charis and her brother were separated almost at once. Charis went to the Sophie's Place Orphanage, and as for Garrick? She never saw him again. He wasn't even a year old. Some couple probably adopted him right off the bat.
Charis was never adopted, and truth be told, she didn't want to be. She kept mostly to herself at boarding school, being far too shy to get in with the popular girls. As the years went on, she got a reputation for being a bit...strange. She was fascinated with detective stories and true crime. If she saw a single shoe by the side of the road or an appliance that was illegally dumped she would take pictures and call the police department.
The folks who run the police tip line all know her by name now.
Charis spent the entire week up to her exit exam in a state of panic. Even though she knew the material and generally made high marks, the thought of actually taking the exam and getting married off to a complete stranger made her physically ill. On the day of the examination, she had to leave the room to throw up a few times, and when all was said and done she'd scored a measly 75%.
Her teachers were, needless to say, not pleased.
Charis was a little relieved to not immediately have to go to some stranger's house as soon as she left school. Sophie's Place was her home, and where she felt safe.
She didn't do well when the Trust switched from the bracelets to the chips. Her bracelet was the only reminder of her mother she had (she never changed the color after her parents were taken away). If she'd been allowed to keep it, she would have.
Now that she's twenty, her draft date is looming over her. She's read her packet numerous times, and if she just had the resources, she'd run a background check on him.
Because anyone can be a killer.
