AppearanceTowering over her older sister at a near-average 5'5" - Melisandre takes pride in hitting the standards for the perfect woman. Wide eyes, a cute button nose, and full lips turn the face of the young blonde to near perfection. While not overly busty, she prides herself in having all the right curves in all the right places, which she shows off by wearing form fitting (though not skin tight) dresses and skirts of only the highest quality. She enjoys her heels, though never goes above around two inches. Her teeth are white and straight, dimples form in her cheeks when she grins, and she has her father's chin.
HistoryThe youngest born from the genetics of Mr. Devereaux Best, Melisandre considers herself to be the baby of the family, even if it isn't necessarily true. She was one of only three Best children born of her father's flesh and blood, and she knew that she had to uphold herself to a higher standard because of it. Because her elder adopted siblings came before her and had firmly adhered to, if not even helped create, the family standard of being a Best child, the youngest daughter loved and even looked up to all of her older siblings.
Only years after her birth, Melisandre's father and her new step mother went to the orphanage to choose one last child. She understood, it was hard for said wife to claim perfection such as Millie when you were just entering the Best family, and so she needed another child to consider her own and raise. Although the newest Best child came in only years before the youngest daughter went away to boarding school, she and he became very close, especially with the age difference being far more minimal than she and the elder Best children. Millie took him under her wing and taught him how to be proper and polite, as all of the Best children were expected to be. He was fortunate to be adopted into such a high-class family, but that also meant high expectations.
At the age of 6 Melisandre received her tracking bracelet with pride, all the women had them and she was trying to act mature beyond her years, and was sent away to boarding school. She was careful to retain all of the lessons she had learned at home on being a proper socialite, and looked down her nose at anyone who chose to mock her ways. She had no trouble telling other children when their manners were improper and how they should behave better, especially those who tried to mock her differentness. Millie didn't let any of their words bother her, however, as she knew it wasn't just different, it was better. You couldn't be better by being the same, and the others just didn't know what they were talking about.
The youngest Best soon lost her status as Baby Best when her father and step-mother took in yet another orphan when she was 14 years of age. The girl was younger than her at age 10 and even had dirty blonde hair. Why they were trying to replace the most perfect youngest daughter that God could ever bestow on this earth alluded the trained Best, and she quickly formed a feud with her youngest sister, if she could even call the mutt a sister. After all, she had been adopted at 10 and therefore had already developed a slew of bad habits. No matter what a court document said, the youngest would never be a true Best, and Melisandre was certain to remind her of it as much as possible.
The youngest Best child (and the only way she would consider herself would be as the youngest Best) continued through schooling, not letting her struggles in classes show. Fake it 'til you make it, she maintained her air of perfection and confidence even while struggling through classes. Perhaps she had focussed too much on being a socialite and not enough of cooking. Perhaps the concept of cleaning still made the perfect blond wrinkle her nose in disgust. However, the young lady wasn't going to get anything other than the way she wanted, and she had learned being a daddy's girls that it only took the right words and the right circumstances to get your way. Therefore, the young girl never failed any of her classes, as she had become an expert manipulator, making false threats and false promises to her teachers, both with the sweetest of smiles. It was almost as if she didn't know she was doing wrong. The blonde certainly had an air for acting innocent, even if she was just a little bit evil under it all.
However, no amount of passed classes or manipulation could change how Melisandre did on her test. Nearly a failure, she wouldn't be drafted until the near matronly age of 20. Discouraged and upset, feeling she had let her father down, the young girl battled with depression, rarely leaving her house. Rumors began forming around town about the youngest Best, but none of them were bad. No one dared cross the highest family in town, and so people began talking that she was in her room studying her draft papers which she had received while walking out of the test, supposedly. People even went as far as to say she had not yet been married because an appropriate amount of digging had revealed intolerable dirt in the background of her soon-to-be-husband. It was rumored that Daddy Best had manipulated the system, paying the government to change the draft of his favorite daughter (Millie would see herself as nothing less), or maybe even ordered a hit on the original man who would see his untimely demise before receiving his draft information.
The fact was, Melisandre had done poorly on her test. She wasn't the best student and at times focussed more on being the perfect person than passing her classes. And so she waited, and waited, and waited some more for her draft to come, all the while letting people speculate as to why she was waiting. No one in the family went out of their way to reveal the truth, it was far easier to instill more fear into the lives of simple Tidewater Natives than to worry about a blemish on the family name. However, the rumors did help the young blond get over her depression as she realized that the reputation she had built for herself would not be so easy to destroy.
When the Ashpoint incident occurred, Millie found herself surrounded by strangers from another land. These people did not know, nor did they care, who she was. They had their own hierarchy, their own family class system, and they thought that the Ashpoint families would remain royalty. Not on her turf. The loss of her bracelet acts as a constant reminder that life will never be the same again. She begged to be allowed to keep it instead of receiving the microchip, which she could not display as a symbol of perfection. She is waiting for her soon-to-come draft papers, her stomach in knots that the government will tie her to a reject, or worse, an Ashpoint-native.
