AppearanceWay way back in the family line there was some Aboriginal blood, some Latin, some white, some Jewish, a lot of things really. He had tan skin with a warm tone. Salt and pepper hair with at least some scruff if not a full beard. He tends to get steadily scruffier the longer a project takes. Occasionally dresses a little outlandishly. Loves a good unique pattern.
HistoryMontreal Roi was an only child. His father played cello professionally and eventually became Tidewater's favourite orchestral conductor. His mother was shyer. Not the socialite woman you might expect, but a homebody. Though she loved her husband's music. She just preferred it on the stereo with a good book then dressed up at the show.
Where Monty to really consider it, think about his childhood, he might suspect his father was gay and that he was perhaps the single child conceived to keep the Trust at bay. But Monty is not generally one for deep introspection. It has crossed his mind, but he's followed the thought no further.
He always shared his father's flair for the dramatic, but he did not inherit his mother's quiet nature. Monty craved companionship. He was always trying to make friends (in some cases minions) and the day he started school was a triumph. He was thrilled to be surrounded by kids his age with plenty of time and things to do. From that point he only came home when he had to, too busy out and running and finding adventure like Tom Sawyer on his river raft.
He met his best friend in their high school years. They were both creative hoping to test into a field that let them explore that prominent end of their minds. His best friend was a few years younger but eventually they were both sorted, Montreal into film and him into the written word. It didn't take them long to find a way to work together. First on children's TV and eventually transitioning into comedy and action film. That was where they met Athos. The perfect blockbuster star with the timing they needed. The three of them have been close ever since.
Montreal was only drafted once in his life. Yessica. Only a month after he turned twenty. She was smart and cutting and he's not convinced he ever saw her face without at least a smudge or stain of her signature black eyeliner. But she was also insecure, it wasn't an issue, Monty was happy to reassure her through much of their lives.
Or at least it wasn't an issue when their life was quiet. Sometime after the birth of their two youngest as Monty's career was taking off she slipped hard. She'd always had bad eating habits, she'd been in therapy during school though not necessarily discouraged. It started with trying to loose the baby weight, then it was trying to fit into the right premiere dress. She was good at explaining things away, rationalizing, and Montreal wasn't the best at taking things seriously. When Thisbe and Tennessee was three Yessica's anorexia had progressed to the point of entering inpatient treatment. She spent years in and out of the Tidewater Stress Centre. But even when she got the point where Monty knew she was going to die, they still had a good relationship. They made each other laugh, they loved each other's company. Monty didn't understand her exactly, never would. But it still broke his heart that she wasn't going to be able to fight hard enough to stay with them.
Yessica passed away when her children were 11 and 14. She had made it to 35, just barely.
They'd all known it was coming for years. It had been a long time since she'd lived at home or even pretended that she'd be able to come home. They'd had time to prepare and accept that it was coming, that the matriarch of the family was starving herself into a skeleton because her mind wasn't wired quite right.
Montreal healed with comedy. He made funny movies and made people laugh until their guts ached. He bought his children's love and let them walk all over him. He healed with red carpet walks with a pretty sponsor or two and long nights wrapping with his core crew about the next project. He's always looking ahead, the next project, his next date, the next big event. Looking forward is easier than looking back.
Nowadays he's kids love to tease him about getting drafted. It's been six years, surely a new wife is just around the corner. Montreal doesn't mind. In fact, the master bedroom is feeling pretty lonely. Sponsors don't keep your sheets warm after all.
