The year is 2191.

The country is the United States.

The current regime, The Trust, has been in power for over one hundred years.

The Trust takes care of you from cradle to grave--they provide you with housing, education, jobs, vehicles--but, in exchange, they control everything about your life. What color car you will drive. Where you will live. And, most important of all: who you will marry and how many children you will have.

Do you fight them or favor them?

History Joss' parents were a teenage couple that found an area where the bracelets didn't work, and one thing led to another. Her mother didn't want to give up the father, but he eventually turned himself in when he realized she was going to perish. The father's family, the Barlow's, adopted Joss, since he was their only son, and therefore, she was the only grandchild they were likely to have. However, this didn't go well.

She stayed with the Barlow's until she was three, and while she wasn't a difficult child, the elder Barlow's never bonded with her as they thought they should. So they contacted her mother's kin, and Joss was handed off to the Brooks. The Brooks had two other grandchildren, and Joss was regularly shifted between the larger Brooks clan. It was an odd childhood, and although she wasn't mistreated, she never really felt as if she belonged, since she had no real place of her own.

At 6, she was fitted with her bracelet and sent off to school. School wasn't great fun for Joss, the girl didn't like to study, and although she finally had a place to call her own, it wasn't private enough to suit her. She longed for privacy and quiet, and never seemed to get such things at school or at home. Due to the bouncing around, she'd already developed a secretive nature and was standoffish towards new people. It took her a long time to warm up to her roommate, and she's sometimes still doubtful of the other girl.

At 10, just as Joss was truly settling into life at school and the Brooks, she got the devastating news that her grandfather Barlow had passed from a heart attack. While they had maintained contact over the years, and she knew they were her grandparents, she'd never gone back to live with them. At 12, the Brooks died in a car accident, and none of the siblings were willing to take her in, effectively abandoning the pre-teen.

What few things she didn't keep at school were moved to St Jerome's, and this is where she spends her weekends. It's taken several years for her to thaw enough around Gideon to consider him a friend, and she is still wary of pretty much everyone else in the house. She takes to the younger children more easily, having known the pain and suffering they are going through, and knowing that they are less likely to cause her any suffering.

Her grades aren't stellar, and she's NOT pleased by the move from Ashpoint. She doesn't give a damn about the chip, figuring it's less intrusive than the bracelet. Although she's technically in favor of the draft, she knows that whomever she is drafted to, he will have to work hard to gain her trust and actually make a marriage between them work.

Joss feels like she's learned the hard way that trusting people is a road to heartbreak and sorrow, and earning her trust is a major investment of time and energy. To those that have though, she is a trustworthy keeper of secrets and sometimes even a good friend.
