HistoryBehind every bully, there's the bully that made them. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Levi Sasmaz grew up watching his father beat his mother, and having his father beat him and his four other siblings, two of them half-siblings from his father's previous draft. If you were to ask him now, Levi would only grin in that manic way of his and shrug, because that taught him the most important lesson he'd ever need to know: power is the ultimate virtue, and, in fact, the only virtue worth having. The second youngest of the children, Levi was a small boy who evaded some of his beatings by learning to read his father's moves, making a mental list of the man's many triggers and conveniently relocating himself if one of those many tripwires was pulled. This knowledge proved insufficient: Cevdet Sasmaz would not cease his rampages until he found some victim on which to foist his wrath. Thus his father also taught Levi the second most important lesson: that a hungry beast will rage until it is fed, and that he did not want to be its meal. Levi learned to always offer up a victim, whether that was hiding in the shadow of his long-suffering mother, Lulu, or setting up one of his siblings to take the fall for some real or imagined mischief. He felt little gratitude towards his mother, and in fact secretly resented her helplessness.
Levi took his anger to school with him, where he learned to be a bully himself. In his youth, he depended more on his speed and agility to escape retaliation, but adolescence transformed him into a regular brute, with the assistance of athletics and determination. It only took one or two reprimands for Levi to grasp that there was also a method to controlling other people - that there were certain people one could get away with hurting, and these people had certain tells, or made certain mistakes that gave him the blessing of authority to do as he pleased. Was it a surprise that the aptitudes sent him to the police academy?
The sponsor Levi was assigned was young, new, and scared - she was the mother of a one-year-old who was taken from her after her husband (a much older man) was executed for adultery. After a few days of particularly dull missionary-position intercourse - after the girl failed to put on her best, fakest smile one afternoon - Levi slapped her across the face. From there, he never looked back, experimenting with all manner of sexual violence. Through trial and error, he learned to do his best impression of an 'otherwise harmless' young man who liked rough sex, a man who joked at the beginning of a session but choked his partner by the end.
Police work would become Levi's pride and joy, a place where he felt he finally fit, and was part of something greater than himself. Forgetting how the brutality of the Trust had birthed the terror that was his father, and deliberately ignoring the gnawing feeling of inadequacy within himself, Levi threw himself into his job. Arrests, corrections, executions - he loved it all, especially the executions. He was cleaning up the world, making it a better place. Unconsciously, he was making sure that the hungry beast called the Trust always had something to eat, so it didn't turn its eyes on him.
He worked his way up through the ranks, happy to move where he was needed, as long as there was advancement on the horizon. Though he rarely expressed grief over the ruined lives of those arrested or otherwise harmed through his work, Levi wept when he was promoted to detective. It was the realization of his dream, the anodyne to his most painful nightmare: to exist beyond the hungry jaws of violence, to become the teeth himself, unassailable.
By the time he came to Tidewater, Levi had been through two wives. The first one, Melody, drowned after three years of marriage, after swimming too far off shore. Hadn't she seen the signs warning of riptide? She left behind a son, Baris. A few years later, Levi's second wife, Isabella, would die from complications after she was hit by a car, while she was seven months pregnant. In both cases, the coroners would turn a blind eye on the cuts and bruises on both women's bodies, given the violence of their deaths.
Tidewater would require him to be microchipped, but it didn't matter at all to Levi. As a detective, there were few places he couldn't go, and even fewer he places he couldn't make up an excuse to be. He arrived with four-year-old Baris in tow, picking up a new live-in mistress within weeks. He had spent the past year in Tidewater unmarried, and caring little about who his next wife is. How long will she last, as the prisoner of a beast?
